Our Mission

The Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund honors the legacy and values of its founders, and provides resources and leadership for creative, risk-taking philanthropy.

VALUES

What we value: How value applies to our grantmaking:

Family legacy

We are defined by the legacy and values of the foundation's founders. These include a strong connection to the local San Francisco community and California, a lifelong concern about the environment, and a deep and unwavering commitment to the Jewish people and Israel.

Generosity

In order to respond to immediate and emerging needs we strive to exceed a 10 percent payout each year with grant payments alone. We encourage others to give more now to address the problems of today.

Leadership

We pursue unique opportunities to serve as a catalyst. We provide early, significant funding to new efforts, paving the way for other supporters.

Creativity

We seek out projects that employ innovative approaches to entrenched problems and that identify and address emerging issues.

Flexibility

We are open, accessible and responsive, which enables us to seize opportunities as they arise.

Respect

We take a hands-off approach in our relationship with grantees. We trust each grantee to make its own decisions and set its own course.

Excellence

We undertake rigorous due diligence as part of our grantmaking process. We set high standards for ourselves and for our grantees. We evaluate our grantees' performance in order to learn from successes as well as failures.

Efficiency

In order to maximize resources for grants we keep our administrative costs low. We streamline our process to minimize paperwork for both the grantee and the foundation. We are committed to responding to inquiries in a timely fashion and to honestly informing grantseekers of their prospects for funding.

Integrity

We infuse and reflect all of the foundation's core values in every aspect of our work. We support organizations that reflect our foundation's principles and, conversely, choose not to support groups with views that diverge from ours.
